For the past few years two operating systems suppliers iOS and Android have created a duopoly that could be hardly challenged by any new start-ups or companies. Nowadays owning a branded phone from these companies even grant some sort of a social status and discussions on the internet on which operating system is the better one more than often get heated. By looking at these discussions there are more than a few flaws of each company pointed out by the people, which proves that none of these companies that have created a duopoly are perfect.

Why could this “fortified” duopoly be in danger?

Whilst looking at it from a logical perspective this duopoly should not be challenged by anyone because of the wealth and resources that these companies have. But one thing that has to be kept in mind is that the electronic sector is changing almost every day with new inventions being introduced way more often, since people nowadays are dependable on them. By looking at the trends Apple and Android took only 28.9% of the shares combined back in 2010 (15.6% and 23.3% respectively). Fast forward 10 years and these companies make up for over 99% of the shares in the market according to Statista. Could these companies become as irrelevant as Nokia or Blackberry if new inventions are being introduced?

Is there a new challenger ready to take on these giants of the mobile technology world?

And now we shift our attention towards and up and coming cellular phone supplier Clean Call. With the current expansion to the United Kingdom this company should attract more attention from new customers.

What actually makes them different?

This is an independent company founded by Ruud de Bruij in 2010 and they operate in one of the most sustainable ways in this sector. Their own modular cell phones are manufactured from recycled and fair-trade materials whilst also offering traceable supply chains. By doing this the company gives more background information to their customers who understand the problems that the lack of sustainability causes. The company has a clear mission and vision stated on their website:

Vision:

We make clean(-er) calls.

The electronics industry is filled with unfair practices; working conditions in the mines are hard, the factories equal sweatshops and the phones are discarded every 18 months.

We feel that the best way to change the industry is to be part of it. So, by making phones of our own, we’re establishing a market for fairer electronics, and creating a positive impact and building new relationships between people and their products.

Mission:

Our phones help us make a positive impact.

We aim to create a positive impact on how phones are made, used and recycled. We support recycling-programs to make sure valuable (raw) materials can be used again and again.

Currently the company sells two different phones CleanCall Pro X and CleanCall Plus on their webstore with prices that are way lower than the new iOS or Android phone:

· CleanCall Pro X is set globally at US$ 595 (including 21% VAT)

· CleanCall Plus is set at US$ 395 (including 21% VAT)

Why should we be looking at this company?

If this company succeeds in the future it will be a huge step for the mobile industry. Other companies getting aware about a sustainable company success might orientate themselves towards a better cause as well. As of for now there is no actual reasons for iOS and Android to turn in to a sustainable way of working because no demand is seen, therefore CleanCall’s success could impact the mobile technology’s sector in a better way. Even if they do not do so good but an attention from the consumers was gained that might make the sector’s giants a bit more woke. CleanCall is definitely an exciting company to watch because it is revolutionary and some big changes might be on the way.
